Now we have hens. And eggs, fresh every day. It seemed like a good idea, eggs being one of the very few perishables (with milk and cheese) that we need to shop for. Building the coop and the run was a major task that took most of our weekends and evenings through May. The hen house was inspired by a visit to our neighbour - who also has hens and a rooster - it is fully insulated and the run is fox proof (we hope) as we dug thick mesh into the ground all the way around. It has a net roof to keep other birds out. They have a sand pit for dust baths, water, and feed. Five white hens and a rooster. He's not too loud. We get 4-5 eggs every day. The dog, the cat and the sheep were curious in the beginning but now they just ignore them.
