My mum was in Finland this week and came to Pojo to see our trees, bees, sheep, weeds and seeds. Over dinner one evening she told us about the bees of Kangaroo Island. Mum visited Kangaroo Island in Australia several years ago when she went to stay with an old friend who had emigrated there. She came back full of stories about the penguins but had never told us about the bees.
Kangaroo Island is believed to host the only remaining colony of pure Ligurian bees in the world
The species is now protected on Kangaroo Island. No bees or bee products are allowed to be imported. Queen bees from the island are exported all over the world.
We have the new frames and P. has glued and painted all night to get them ready. They are not the same brand as the previous ones (which are out of stock) and they were a bit tricky to put together as they weren't always square which is a pain. Hopefully the bees won't notice the difference.
